Trastevere Film Festival: Free Cinema for Everybody

If you like the cinema, Trastevere is the right place for you. Every day, during June and July, Piazza San Cosimato becomes a wonderful and completely free outdoor cinema.
Trastevere Film Festival started on June 1 with We All Loved Each Other So Much (C’eravamo tanto amati), directed by the great Ettore Scola, and will continue for two months with an extensive program and many movies in their original language, with Italian or English subtitles.
The festival includes movies from Italian Comedy, Disney Classics and Pixar masterpieces, as well as movies directed by Martin Scorsese, Wim Wenders, Ang Lee, Xavier Dolan, Richard Curtis and many others.
Many movies will be presented by Italian directors and actors such as Roberto Benigni, Ferzan Ozpetek, Renzo Arbore, Dario Argento, Kim Rossi Stuart, Enzo D’Alò. This is a great opportunity not only to meet such important artists, but also to think and to discuss the movies.
Trastevere is surely one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods of Rome and it’s an exciting place to spend a summer evening with friends, under the stars, sharing with many other people the emotions on the big screen.
However, Trastevere Film Festival is not only a place for cinema lovers but also one of the most important cultural and political experiences in Rome.
This event was born in 2012, when a group of friends decided to occupy the Cinema America, an old, forsaken cinema in Trastevere. Since that moment, “i ragazzi del Cinema America” (the Cinema America kids), as they are called, have worked hard to create a place for everyone not only to watch movies, but also to discuss our society.
Through the years, “i ragazzi” have brought the cinema to many other places in the city, with an initiative called Pirate Screens. They show movies not only in the historical centre of Rome, but also in the suburbs, from Castel Sant’Angelo to Montesacro, from San Pietro in Vincoli to Colli Aniene, discussing important and current themes, for example, the mafia and its victims.
One year ago, they created Trastevere Film Festival, as another way to express their idea of a “cultural space” for the city. Therefore, participating in the festival entails not only good cinema and famous guests, but also allows a different way of thinking about the city, the chance to meet other people, and to build a place where art and cinema can be a means of change and improvement for our lives and society.
