The Martian, directed by Ridley Scott, is based on the novel by Andy Weir. Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is an astronaut on a mission to Mars with his crew. When a terrible storm forces everybody to flee the planet, Mark, believed dead, is left alone on Mars. But he is still alive, so he must survive by himself on the barren planet. Fortunately, he is a botanist, and he fabricates a greenhouse where he can cultivate potatoes.
Meanwhile, NASA discovers that Mark is still alive, and organizes a plan to save him.

Ridley Scott surely loves stories about men who have to fight for their survival (think about The Gladiator), and with The Martian he creates the figure of a hero who uses his brilliant intellect to solve problems.
Mark is helped not only by his incredible talent, but also by his sense of humor, and, despite the trials he has to face, he remains optimistic. Without any excessive pathos, the movie offers an interesting reflection about loneliness. Mark is proud to be the first man to live on the lifeless planet. Of course, he wants to go back home, but he is also fascinated by the immeasurable horizons of Mars. A strong bond grows between him and the solitary planet.

Matt Damon proves to be a great actor in this movie. He perfectly identifies himself with his character, and it is no surprise that he received a nomination as "Best Actor" at the 2016 Oscars.
In addition, The Martian received six other Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for Drew Goddard.
With The Martian, Ridley Scott turns back to his old glory, to movies as Alien or The Gladiator, and, once again, he proves himself to be an excellent storyteller.
