For the artist and former lawyer Nathan Sawaya (1971), everything can be art, also LEGO. Those small bricks are his medium to create sculptures, reproduce masterpieces like the Monalisa, and transform a toy into art.
The exhibition “The art of the brick” has travelled throughout the world. From New York to Sidney, and the work of Nathan Sawaya has become so famous to finally arrive in Rome (28 October - 14 February). As we usually say in Italy, that lateness is better than nothing, and now we have the opportunity to admire Sawaya’s LEGO sculptures. “The art of the brick” is held in the SET Spazio Eventi Tirso, Rome, and I suggest you to hurry up, move your legs, and go see it (maybe with your little brother or cousin). The space of the exhibition is well arranged, with thematic rooms and some areas for single sculptures that better represent the artist, even if, sometimes, lights don't work really well with the artworks. However, that’s why you should definitely see it!

First of all, Sawaya is distinctly different from many contemporary artists. He does not create a philosophical or not accessible art, but he is clear and simple in his approach: he likes art and LEGO, so why not mix up the two? Although the exhibition shows many pieces that seem to reflect on the human condition, Sawaya’s art is highly approachable to children too. Sawaya's playful approach to sculpture brings people of all ages to appreciate art. Through his little bricks, Sawaya is able to build a world of fantasy, emotions, and also of reflections on the human condition.

Throughout the exhibition, visitors can play an interesting game, such as recognizing the reproduced artworks (often in 1:1 scale) in the second room. Even Sawaya’s comments to his work and technique are some kind of fun. He is simply ironic as, for him, art should not necessary be a mind-game in order to be comprehended in soul and meaning.
If you happen to be in Rome, then don't miss “The art of the brick” and, especially, to read the artist’s comment on each piece and follow the introductive video at the beginning of the exhibition, and… just dive into Sawaya’s world!
