Più libri, più liberi: a national book fair

From the 5th until the 8th December, Più Libri Più Liberi, a national fair dedicated to minor publishing houses, will take place at Palazzo dei Congressi in Rome. This 14th edition will look closely at the changes faced by the publishing sector, embracing their vitality. Five days of meetings, conferences, workshops, readings, shows: more than 300 events which explore the new market of a wide readership. The fair is dedicated not only to writers but also to cartoonists, youtubers, actors, journalists, scientists. This year's program is rich with famous and debuting writers, Italian and foreign, its purpose being to give publishers more visibility and an opportunity to present their work and discuss about the difficulties of the Italian cultural scene. In addition, this edition will comment on recent news and sociopolitical issues. Among the writers who will participate, Erri De Luca, Marcello Fois, Andrea Camilleri, Giancarlo De Cataldo, Niccolò Ammaniti, Dacia Maraini, Goffredo Fofi, Nicola Lagioia, Francesco Piccolo, and also Natasha Fennell, Annie Ernaux, Julia Glass, Stéphanie Hochet, Cécile Coulon, Alain Mabanckou, Morten Brask, Marcelo Figueras, Alejandro Zambra. With a glance at the past, since the 2015 marks forty years from the death of Pier Paolo Pasolini, a series of events will be dedicated to him and to his works. On the other hand, the fair pays attention to the recent evolutions of reader's (and viewer's) tastes: among the guests we find famous Italian Youtubers as The Pills and Shooter hates you (Alessandro Masala). They represent a new and creative wave of artists who escape from traditional means and are able to influence and shape the (especially young) public's perception of art, a public whose interest in the products of publishing industry may follow new paths. There is no denying to the deep crisis which the publishing sector is going through. The editorial world has changed, leaving space only to big companies and developing a new branch represented by e-books. But this fair is a clever reaction to it, since it welcomes different and new artistic expressions. A struggle that goes on, as this year's motto goes, "for the love of books"!
